When specifying valves for an industrial application, one of the first decisions is material grade — and for stainless steel valves, that almost always comes down to SS304 or SS316. The two look nearly identical and cost roughly the same at first glance, but the difference in performance can matter enormously depending on what is flowing through your pipes.
The Core Difference: Molybdenum
Both SS304 and SS316 are austenitic stainless steels built on a similar base of chromium and nickel, which gives them their corrosion resistance and durability. The key difference is that SS316 contains an additional 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, an element that significantly improves resistance to chlorides and other aggressive chemicals.
This single addition is why SS316 costs more, and why it performs so much better in certain environments — particularly anywhere saltwater, chlorides, or acidic chemicals are present.
SS304: The Everyday Workhorse
SS304 is the most widely used stainless steel grade in general industrial applications. It offers strong corrosion resistance for most water, food-grade, and general process applications, and is more cost-effective than SS316 for projects where extreme chemical exposure is not a concern.
- Suitable for clean water, general wastewater, and most food and beverage applications
- Good resistance to oxidation and general corrosion
- Lower cost than SS316, often by 15 to 25 percent
- Not recommended for chloride-rich or highly acidic environments
SS316: The Chemical and Marine Grade
SS316 is the preferred choice wherever chlorides, salts, or aggressive chemicals are present. This makes it the standard specification for coastal facilities, chemical processing plants, and any application where valve failure due to corrosion would be costly or dangerous.

Which Should You Choose?
As a general rule, if your application involves clean water, general wastewater, or standard industrial process fluids, SS304 is usually sufficient and more cost-effective. If your site is near the coast, handles chemicals, or processes anything with meaningful chloride content, SS316 is worth the additional investment to avoid premature valve failure.
When in doubt, it is worth discussing your specific medium, temperature, and pressure conditions with a supplier who can confirm the right grade rather than guessing based on cost alone — a valve failure from the wrong material choice is far more expensive than the price difference between the two grades.
