Measuring flow accurately in biogas and palm oil mill effluent service is harder than in clean water applications. The media are wet, sometimes corrosive, often carry solids, and in the case of biogas can vary in composition and pressure. Choosing the right flow meter technology for these conditions is the difference between reliable data and a meter that fouls, drifts, or fails within months.
Why POME and Biogas Are Challenging
Palm oil mill effluent is a warm, acidic, solids-laden liquid that can coat or abrade sensors. Biogas is a saturated, low-pressure gas containing methane, carbon dioxide, moisture, and hydrogen sulphide, which is corrosive. A flow meter that performs well on clean water or dry natural gas may struggle in either of these services, so material compatibility and tolerance for the medium come first.
Common Flow Meter Types
- Electromagnetic meters, well suited to conductive liquids like POME with no moving parts to foul, provided the liquid is conductive
- Vortex meters, capable of handling both gas and liquid and tolerant of moderate temperatures, useful for biogas lines
- Thermal mass meters, often used for gas flow where direct mass measurement is valuable
- Ultrasonic meters, non-intrusive and useful where avoiding contact with the medium is an advantage

Beyond the Technology
Selecting the meter type is only part of the job. Pipe size, straight-run requirements upstream and downstream, pressure and temperature ratings, and the material grade of wetted parts all affect accuracy and service life. In corrosive biogas service in particular, specifying the right materials is as important as the measurement principle itself.
Getting Installation Right
Even the correct meter will read poorly if installed badly. Most flow meters need a defined length of straight pipe before and after them to give the flow a stable profile, and orientation matters for meters that must stay full of liquid or drain condensate. Planning the installation alongside the meter selection avoids accuracy problems that are difficult to fix later.
